2009 Mercedes-Benz Golf Championship: Geoff Ogilvy Wins in Style

January 15th, 2009

Geoff OgilvyAs we discussed previously on this blog, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz Golf Championship was to kick off the PGA Tour’s annual chain of pro golfing events in style. And it delivered, with four days of hard-fought golf by world-class golfer. The tournament took place from January 8-11.

The fact that some of the Tour’s brightest stars - Tiger Woods among them - were not on hand came with a thick silver lining: fans got to focus more than ever on the beauty and grandeur of Maui, Hawaii and the Kapalua Resort.

PGATour.com offers a top-notch summary of Geoff Ogilvy’s wire-to-wire victory, which included his near-complete implosion and collapse during the final round.

Golf Vacation Insider has an excellent article about the merits of the Kapalua Plantation Course. One of the best reasons to golf there is that you can do it all year long - even when much of the world writhes in numbing cold or pulverizing heat. Another compelling reason is the scenery - the rolling ocean waves and brilliant sunshine, the gullies and crevices, the whales gliding through the surf. Finally, you simply must play the 18th hole- all 663 yards of it. There’s a 100-foot-plus drop in elevation in that hole alone.

10th Annual Billabong Pro Maui Surfing Event Recap

December 31st, 2008

Maui Vacation

Pretty, huh?

That’s Maui, baby.

Which is where Kapalua is located (of course).

And where the 10th Annual Billabong Pro Maui was held at Honolua Bay at our very own Kapalua Resort from December 8-20, 2008. (See Flickr for a bunch of great pics from the event.)

As a conclusion to the WCT Women’s World Title race, the Billabong Pro Maui dished out a prize purse of $85,000 and welcomed 17 of the best female surfers on earth.

It featured Australian Rebecca Woods, Brazilian Silvana Lima and many other wonderful surfer girls.

Two-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore won her first Vans Triple Crown by conquering the strong field and taking home $22,000 in prize money.

The event was free and anyone was welcome to attend.

You can learn more about the event and all that happened (with videos too!) at the Billabong Pro website.
